What a great last couple of weeks in Towns County! Born out of the thought to make a positive out of a negative, the Chamber and Tourism Boards along with city and county government, state and federal agencies plus a large group of students from Towns County High School embarked on a shoreline clean-up of Lake Chatuge! We had an amazing turnout and was featured on 11 Alive News with Wes Sarginson who thoroughly enjoys the beauty of our area! Following the kick-off of the ongoing lake clean-up on Thursday, we had the annual Art Walk and Mountain Country Christmas over the weekend. Towns County is definitely in the Christmas Spirit now!

Good Afternoon from the beautiful North Georgia mountians. When planning your fall color trip to our area, please consult this helpful information to make the most of your trip. Be safe in your travels and remember to be courteous to other drivers as traffic in the mountains is heavier than usual.

Most of the forest is still green but it's getting pretty obvious things are beginning to change. Yesterday a cold front moved through the area bringing some much needed rain. The rain was heavy in a few spots but others got very little. The wind blew pretty hard in the vicinity of the heavier showers and blew some of the leaves off the trees but most are still there.

The weather forcast for the next few days looks like it will be perfect for bringing on very noticeable changes. Low temps in the lower 40s may actually dip into the upper 30s by Friday night and Saturday morning on the higher mountains. Days will be mostly sunny with highs mostly in the mid-60s to lower 70s in the lower elevations. Don't be surprised if the color development really kicks into high gear in the next 5 to 7 days. Peak color is still expected during the third week of October.

Estimated percentage of current fall foliage: 15% mostly above 3,500 feet.

Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway
Ridge and Valley Scenic Byway
From Cleveland, GA take State Highway 129 north. Turn left onto State Highway 180 just past Vogel State Park. Continue on 180 to State Highway 60. Turn left onto Highway 60 to Dahlonega. An alternate is to turn right on Highway 60 and head to Blue Ridge

Peak viewing period: The third and fourth week of October.

Viewing tips/suggestions: Temperatures in the mountains will be cool until later in the afternoon and it is often windier in the mountains than in the foothills. Take a sweater, jacket, and hat.

FOURTH ANNUAL HIAWASSEE FESTIVAL OF ARTS
TO SHOWCASE 100 TALENTED ARTISTS

Hiawassee, Ga. (August 04, 2007) – “We have a line up of 100 talented artists and are busy putting the finishing touches on this year’s exciting Festival. It’s a show you can bring the whole family to and not only enjoy the art of some very talented people but you can listen to live jazz, partake of some great food specialties and the kids can be creative at our newly expanded children’s pavilion,” commented Wendy Smith, 2007 Festival Chairman.

Mark your calendars for this two-day juried show at the historic Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds for Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The festival features 100 local and national artists specializing in watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, sculpture, jewelry, glass, wood, metal and fiber art.

“The festival is presented by the Mountain Arts Association and its many dedicated volunteers. We are so grateful for their support,” commented Cheryl Barrett, MAA President. “And, we are pleased to be able to showcase some of our top local artists and provide a venue so they can market their work while attracting nationally-known artists from around the country,” she continued. Visitors can watch the artists doing live demonstrations throughout the event.
Barbara Terrell, Children’s Chair continued, “We have really expanded our children’s pavilion this year and hope you will bring the kids out to make some jeweled tiaras and tote bags, paint and personalize a unique visor, paint with the masters and take advantage of some talented people we will have helping stimulate their creativity.”

Ms. Terrell explained, “Young talent from North Georgia and Western North Carolina will also be able to participate in the “Artists of Tomorrow” contest. Art students in 1st through 12th grades from Towns, Clay and Union County schools were invited to submit work for scholarships, cash awards and display their work at the festival.”

For a distinctive ambiance, The World Jazz & Music Society provides live entertainment throughout both days. Complete schedules of the performances are on the web site. Rhubarb Jones is not only an Atlanta radio icon, he's also Grand Marshal of the 2007 Georgia Mountain Fair Parade! Jones has been in radio broadcasting since 1971 and has been on the air at Georgia's Eagle 106.7 for over 10 years. In 2001 Jones was inducted into the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tenn. and has been named the "Best Radio Personality" by Atlanta Magazine. Jones is well-known for his charity projects, which include his annual "March Across Georgia" and "Celebrity Golf Classic." Together the two events have raised close to $4 million for the Georgia Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

YHC to play in the College World Series

YHC will play New Mexico JC Saturday @ 3:00

The Young Harris College Mountain Lions are one of ten Junior College teams left in the nation. This year marks the 50th anniversary for the Junior College World Series. Young Harris will take on New Mexico Junior College in the opening day of the tournament. New Mexico has a rich tradition and is no stranger to Grand Junction. In 2005 New Mexico JC made its first trip to the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series and went through the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. This year New Mexico JC has a 47-6 overall record.

Western Nevada and Delgado Community College are the other two teams in YHC's bracket. The Mountain Lions will take on one of these teams' regardless of the outcome in game 1 against New Mexico JC. The Mountain Lions come into the tournament as one of the hottest teams. YHC has won 19 of their last 21 games. WNGM 1230 has taken the opportunity to let the community follow the games from Grand Junction, Colorado. YHC fans can listen to the games on 1230 am or pull the games up on the internet.

Game 3 - YHC 5 Chattanooga State 4

The Young Harris College Mountain Lions came from behind to win a one run game over a very talented Chattanooga State team. Nick Terry pitched seven shutout innings to record the victory. Terry entered the game with no outs in the third inning and recorded four strikeouts and only allowed three hits to secure a trip to Grand Junction.

Mike Hornsby and J.C. Lyons led the Mountian Lions offensively with three hits an RBI and a run scored each. Jordan Price scored the game winning run when he led off the seventh with a single through the right side of the infield. He was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Markakis and scored on an error.

Game 2 - YHC 1 Chattanooga State 6

Chattanooga State forced Game 3 by scoring five in the top of the 11th inning. The Mountain Lions got an amazing start from Freshman Stephen McCray but couldn't capitalize on various offensive opportunities. McCray struck out five batters in a impressive 10 1/3 inning outing.

The YHC offense had plenty of opportunities but Jon King was the only Mountain Lion to get a big hit. In the bottom of the seventh Matt Sanders singled through the left side of the infield and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Markakis. King followed the sacrifice bunt with a double down the left field line.

Tomorrow's game three will start at 2:00. YHC will be the home team in the game. The winner of the game will be on a fast track to Grand Junction, Colorado to compete in the Junior College World Series.

Game 1 - YHC 6 Chattanooga State 4

The Young Harris College Mountain Lions scored four runs in the fourth inning and held off the Chattanooga State offense for a 6-4 game 1 victory. Sophomore Will Harvil threw seven solid innings to record his eleventh victory of the 2007 season. Harvil got out of some tough spots early in the game and kept Chattanooga State scoreless until they scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning. YHC answered back in the top of the seventh to grab a 6-4 lead. Sophomore Nick Terry entered the game and threw two scoreless innings to record his third save of the season.

The Mountain Lion offense exploded for four runs in the third inning. Jonathan King led off the inning with a line drive single up the middle. After a Mike Hornsby walk Stephen McCray got the Mountain Lions on the board with a line drive double down the left field line and advanced to third on a throwing error. Zac Rhinesmith drove in the third run of the inning with a two out single to left field. The fourth run of the inning was scored on a misplayed line drive off the bat of Mike Lobacz.

The Mountain Lions scored one more in the top of the sixth when Mike Lobacz led off with a double to left-center field. Mike Hornsby eventually drove Lobacz home when he hit a two-out line drive single up the middle. The Mountain Lions scored their final run in the top of the seventh inning.

YHC will be the home team for the second game of the series. Game two will be played Saturday at 2:00. We would like to invite everyone to this weekends games. Please come and support your 2007 Region XVII Champion Mountain Lions.

Tour de Georgia (www.tourdegeorgia.com)

is North America's premier, professional cycling event and rolling

festival. Shining the world's spotlight on the state of Georgia each

spring, this international event is an annual, multi-day,

professional cycling stage race that draws the most elite cyclists

and showcases one-of-a-kind towns and terrain of the Southeast.

Sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and USA Cycling

(USAC), the Tour de Georgia has a 2.Hors Classe rating, making the

event one of the top-ranked stage races in the world.

2007 Tour de Georgia will take cyclists and spectators through 12

Host Venues: Peachtree City, Macon, Thomaston, Rome, Chattanooga,

501c(6) non-profit entity, GPED's mission is to develop the Tour

property as an economic and marketing property for the state of

Georgia and for the benefit of the Georgia Cancer Coalition. The GPED

Board of Directors contracts with Medalist Sports, a full-service

sports marketing company based in Georgia, to oversee all event

management and marketing.

Medalist Sports is led by partners

Chris Aronhalt and Jim Birrell, who have been involved with the Tour

de Georgia since the inaugural race in 2003. Medalist Sports manages

race logistics and operations for the Tour de Georgia and oversees

the planning and execution of all event management, including

business partnerships, event marketing and publicity. The

headquarters for Medalist Sports are located south of metro Atlanta
